Safety House Association of Victoria

About Us

Thanks for taking an interest in Safety House Association Victoria. We are a
non-profit community organisation promoting safety for all Victorians – especially the young and elderly. Safetyhouses started in Dandenong in 1979.

At the heart of what we do is a network of 8,000 safety houses; identified by the famous little yellow triangles on letterboxes. These homes belong to authorised volunteers who offer their home as a safe place to turn to when children or seniors feel threatened, unsafe or need urgent help.

There are many reasons someone may need a safety house:

  • a child is approached by a person who makes them feel scared or causes them harm;
  • a child is injured or sick;
  • a school child is being bullied;
  • a senior is feeling ill;
  • a senior is disorientated;
  • a child is lost.

Safety House Victoria also provides education in schools and the community on personal safety.

We have a long and supportive relationship with Victoria Police and we’re proud that Chief Commissioner Christine Nixon is our patron.

We are governed by a volunteer board made up by representatives of existing Safety House committees.

We employ one full time staff member and 3 casual staff members.

We also benefit from the enthusiasm and hard work of hundreds of local committee volunteers.
